CPS Band Program

Learning a musical instrument can positively benefit primary school children through enhanced creativity, teamwork, concentration, engagement and can provide a boost in self-esteem with their new skills.

The CPS Band Program is a Sub-committee of the P&C that is parent volunteer led and coordinated by a Musical Director. It is available for students from years 3 - 6, with no prior musical experience or knowledge required to commence.

The band program is made up of 5 Bands:

  • 3 wind ensembles

> Junior Band (year 3)

> Intermediate Band (year 4)

> Concert Band (years 5-6)

  • 2 Jazz Ensembles:

> Stage Band (year 4-6, selection via audition process)

> Big Band (year 4-6, selection via audition process)

Wind Ensembles have two rehearsals each week during term-time, including a morning and lunch-time rehearsal. Jazz Ensembles rehearse one morning per week during term-time.

Students perform at school assemblies and events and in a variety of festivals, competitions and community showcases throughout the year.

Students also have access to annual camps, including Junior Band Camp, Jazz Ensemble Workshop and an intensive 2-day overnight Band Camp (for Intermediate and Concert Bands).

What are the core components of the Band Program?

  • Attend two band rehearsals per week

  • Attend one private 30 minute lesson with a tutor per week

  • Practise regularly at home (10 minutes per day to start with)

  • Attend Band Camps, festivals and competitions

How do I find a tutor?

  • An email with a list of approved music tutors is sent to parents when you sign up for the Band Program.  You will need to contact the tutor directly to book lessons.  Tutors on this list provide their lessons at school, both during and outside of school hours.  Note that the tutors are independent from the school.

  • If your child already has a tutor, you can continue with that tutor.

What about sourcing an instrument?

  • The program offers an instrument hire service (except for flutes and clarinets) at an additional cost.  Fees for hire and servicing are set out in the handbook, and differ depending on the instrument.

What are the fees for the Program?

  • The annual fee covers the cost of the music director’s services, purchasing and photocopying music and folders, competition entry fees, and transportation to and from performances held during school time.

  • Additional fees include the uniform, band bag and book, tutor fees and camp fees.
